The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore city municipal corporation has geo-tagged around 1,500 open space reservation (OSR) sites as part of efforts to create a comprehensive digital inventory of reserve lands and prevent encroachments. The process is nearing completion and the civic body is expected to integrate the details with its official website.

Coimbatore has a total of 2,702 OSR sites, of which 1,507 have been geo-tagged through GIS mapping, according to corporation officials. In addition, the title-change process has been completed for 1,771 OSR sites, officials said. The corporation had begun GIS mapping of OSR lands in 2025. At the initial stage, around 500 parcels had been mapped, with the proposed database designed to include ward and zone details, survey and patta numbers, approved plot numbers, layout plans, extent of OSR land and details of encroachments. Once the online system is fully integrated, residents will be able to access key details of individual OSR sites, including the survey number, ward number and other official land records. The initiative is expected to make it easier for residents and prospective property buyers to verify whether land in layouts have been earmarked as OSR and belong to the civic body. Drone imagery and field verification by licensed surveyors were also proposed as part of the exercise. The corporation’s website already hosts ward-wise reserve-site details, including survey numbers, layout approval details and the present condition of several sites. Further, the GIS will be integrated with additional details, coordinates, and present condition.
