Kochi: The detailed project report (DPR) for Phase 3 expansion of Kochi Metro outlines the nearly 17.5-km extension from Aluva to Angamaly, establishing airport connectivity, as the “most preferred one” while excluding the connectivity to Angamaly railway station, a growing regional demand.

Under this proposal, the Metro line originates as an elevated viaduct from Aluva along NH 544 up to Kariyad.

Among four options evaluated on technical feasibility, cost, and ridership, the DPR highlights a “hybrid corridor” combining elevated and underground stretches as the most favourable alignment. The study found that the same will increase land acquisition cost, especially near the airport,” higher education minister Roji M John, who is in charge of Ernakulam district, told TOI. It then transitions into a critical 3km underground tunnel to directly connect to Cochin International Airport via an underground terminal station. Beyond the airport, the route reverts to an elevated corridor passing through Nayathode, Kavaraparambu, and Arikkal Junction before terminating at Karayamparambu in Angamaly Town.

“A survey conducted by the action council showed that over 90% of local respondents favor routing the line closer to NH 544 to serve the Angamaly railway station, Municipal bus stand, and industrial units like TELK.

“We were told that securing the airport connectivity is mandatory under National Metro Rail policy guidelines to justify the project,” the minister said. Proponents argue that incorporating the railway station would transform Angamaly into a multi-modal transit hub linking regional rail, local buses, national highways, and the Metro, significantly boosting long-term patronage,” said Seby Varghese, action council president. However, a Metro official said the DPR suggests the setting up of a Metro station near the airport railway station, and that the same will facilitate easy access to airport travellers.

Earlier, the minister had batted for Angamaly connection during a meeting of stakeholders, including Kochi Metro officials, held at Aluva Palace three weeks ago.
