Educators urged to respond to challenges faced by students, school heads
Schools recording the highest marks and 100% pass results in Classes X and XII during 2025-26 were felicitated. Happy Schooling, implemented by MS Chellamuthu Trust and Research Foundation in partnership with HCL Foundation, is an emotional wellbeing and mental health programme covering 24 Madurai corporation schools from April 2026 to March 2027. It reaches 24 school heads, 200 teachers and students from Classes VI to XII.
Teachers Muniyamma and Uma Mageshwari of NSSM Corporation School said sustained counselling support had helped create a substance-free campus, supported students experiencing mental distress, improved behaviour and contributed to a calmer atmosphere. M Kannan, director-research at MS Chellamuthu Trust and Research Foundation, spoke about how schools use available resources. V Kalaiselvi, regional joint director of collegiate education, Madurai region, urged educators to respond rather than react to challenges faced by students and school heads. She described emotional wellbeing and positive mental health as foundations for academic and personal growth. Teachers completed an emotional wellbeing assessment questionnaire and an emotional culture checklist conducted by Prof G Gurubharathy.
Madurai: A training programme linking teachers’ emotional wellbeing with students’ academic performance was held for heads of Madurai corporation schools on Saturday under the Happy Schooling initiative.
