Thrissur : Responding to the media questions on Centre’s submission before the high court that Kerala could not be given priority over other states in the establishment of an AIIMS, Union minister of state Suresh Gopi on Wednesday said, “I will not seek votes in the next election without at least laying the foundation stone for AIIMS in Kerala.”

CPI district secretary K G Sivanandan also demanded that Gopi voluntarily relinquish his MP post, which, he alleged, he had won by making false promises. Centre had only informed the high court about the issue of prioritisation, according to Gopi. They said that instead of resorting to “subterfuge and verbal wrangling”, Gopi should make a clear statement on when AIIMS would actually be established in the state. DCC president Joseph Tajet said Gopi should not be a “peddler of fake dreams” and added that it was for Gopi to decide whether he should continue as an MP in the wake of Centre’s submission before the high court. CPM district secretary Abdul Khader accused Gopi of indulging in “theatrics” as though he was unaware of Centre’s submission.

He noted that Union health minister J P Nadda had given an assurance in this regard. He also alleged that the state govt is yet to submit a list of five possible locations for setting up AIIMS.
