The petitioner stated that people belonging to the vannar community are traditionally engaged in washing and ironing clothes and other allied occupations. They are residing in various parts of Tamil Nadu and are presently classified as MBC in most parts of the state. However, in Kanyakumari district and Sengottai taluk in Tirunelveli district, the community is classified as SC. He stated that the classification has resulted in an anomalous situation wherein people belonging to the same vannar community are receiving different constitutional and statutory benefits merely on the basis of the place of their residence. The differential treatment has directly affected members of the vannar community in various spheres of their social, educational and economic life. Hence, the petitioner moved court seeking relief.
Madurai : Madras high court on Monday sought a counter affidavit from the state government on a plea seeking to notify vannar community, presently classified as most backward class (MBC) throughout Tamil Nadu , as a scheduled caste community (SC), on a par with the status already accorded to the community in Kanyakumari district and Sengottai taluk of Tirunelveli district.
