Idukki : A tea factory and a hotel were among five establishments fined a total of Rs 1.08 lakh for violating waste-management norms and allegedly discharging wastewater into a waterbody in Devikulam, Idukki.

The hotel had been fined for a similar violation five months ago, but had reportedly failed to pay the penalty and continued the violation, officials said. Officials said strict inspections and enforcement action would continue against establishments found violating waste-management rules. The action was taken during a joint inspection by the Idukki district enforcement squad of the LSG department and the Devikulam grama panchayat. The squad found that Elleppetty Tea Factory and Lifeline Hotel at Eighth Mile were discharging wastewater into a nearby waterbody. Three other establishments were penalised for dumping waste in their premises and burning plastic. Download the TOI App.
