Kochi: An interlocutory application (IA) has been filed in a PIL alleging that the AKG Centre in Thiruvananthapuram was built on encroached University of Kerala land, seeking a direction to revenue officials to measure the extent of land occupied by the Centre.

The petitioner further alleged that although notices were issued to all concerned, including the director of the AKG Centre, for measuring the land in their possession, they resisted the move, eventually forcing the authorities to withdraw the measurement proceedings. He further alleged that the AKG Research Centre is not a recognised research institution of the university and that, even if the land had been validly assigned, it had been grossly misused as an office and political hub of the CPM, in violation of the purpose of the assignment and applicable statutory provisions. The IA stated that the revenue authorities had earlier initiated steps to measure the property in question following a court directive to file an affidavit clarifying the status of its possession.
Sasikumar’s PIL contended that although 15 cents of university land were reportedly assigned in Aug 1977 to the state secretary of the CPM for establishing the AKG Memorial Research Centre, the Centre is now in possession of around 55 cents. A bench of Chief Justice Soumen Sen and Justice V M Syan Kumar will consider the PIL and the IA, both filed by R S Sasikumar, a retired joint registrar of the university and a native of Thiruvananthapuram, next week.
