The Cochin devaswom board assistant engineer had submitted a report before the court detailing the works carried out in connection with the damage caused during the Thrissur Pooram fireworks in 2025. Kochi: The high court has decided to look into complaints regarding the alleged threat to the ancient temple structures of Vadakkumnathan Temple from the bursting of firecrackers during the Thrissur Pooram festival. The court was considering a petition that arose from a complaint filed by a devotee alleging that the bursting of crackers had caused extensive damage to the temple structures, including the gopurams and the roof of the koothambalam, and that a large number of roofing tiles of the gopurams had been broken. It was also alleged that the structural stability of the temple buildings had been adversely affected by vibrations generated by the bursting of crackers. However, the bench noted that the report did not deal with the structural damage, if any, caused to the temple structures by vibrations generated by the bursting of crackers. It further observed that the issues involved concerned not merely the recurring expenditure incurred on repairs, but also the preservation and structural safety of an ancient temple complex and the need to balance the conduct of the traditional festival with the protection of the heritage structures from potential damage.
