Kochi : A 24-year-old man who noticed a small swelling on the right side of his abdomen while taking a shower was found to have a 4-kg liver tumour that doctors said had grown silently for several years.

“The primary tumour had developed as a tiny tumour of around 4g in the upper part of the small intestine and had later spread to the liver,” said Dr Fadl H Veerankutty, who led the surgical team. “Mobilising the liver was not initially possible, so we performed the resection using a pure anterior approach,” Dr Veerankutty said. The patient recovered well and was discharged after a week, doctors said.

The patient, pursuing postgraduate studies, had initially undergone a biopsy at a hospital in Vellore before being evaluated at VPS Lakeshore Hospital. Doctors diagnosed the tumour as a neuroendocrine tumour.
