A crowded Venad Express at Tripunithura railway station
Kochi: A new daily train service will be introduced on the Ernakulam–Kottayam–Kollam route within 10 days to ease evening rush-hour overcrowding on Venad Express. Mavelikkara MP Kodikunnil Suresh announced the decision after meeting Union railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in New Delhi.
A railway spokesperson said 16 coaches fitted with bucket seats have been transferred to Thiruvananthapuram division to address passenger concerns. The new train is expected to leave Ernakulam Junction around 4pm and travel via Kottayam and Chengannur, reaching Kollam ahead of Venad Express. Meanwhile, southern railway has initiated steps to replace the existing seats in Jan Shatabdi trains with bucket seats following widespread passenger complaints that seats in the newly allotted coaches were uncomfortable for long-distance journeys.
