Kochi : An Assam native accused of theft who escaped from Aluva sub-jail is yet to be traced.
The search for Madhurjya Sonowal, 28, who escaped from the sub-jail on Monday evening, continued on Tuesday. Perumbavoor police arrested him while he was allegedly trying to sell the stolen phones in Perumbavoor and later handed him over to Edathala police. Download the TOI App.
Sonowal, who was remanded in a mobile phone theft case, went missing around 5pm after he was taken out along with other inmates to use the toilet. Jail authorities suspect that he escaped by scaling the rear wall.
Based on a complaint filed by the jail superintendent, Aluva police registered a case and began an investigation. Police are examining CCTV footage and checking possible routes taken by Sonowal. He was remanded on Sunday in connection with the theft of nine mobile phones from the workers’ quarters at a plywood company in Mambilly industrial area of Edathala.
