Kochi : State human rights commission (KSHRC) has ordered a probe into complaints of severe sanitation issues at Mundamveli P&T Colony apartment complex in Kochi.
The probe follows a complaint filed by social activist Thampi Subramanian after news reports highlighted the plight of 78 relocated families. Residents state that the unsanitary conditions have persisted ever since they shifted to the apartment complex in Jan 2024. The rights panel noted that the situation has directly impacted around 65 children living in the complex.
Recently, a resident was injured when a ceiling fan fell on him,” said Abhilash P Parameswaran, president of P&T apartment residents association. Built by GCDA to rehabilitate residents from the flood-prone P&T Colony in Kadavanthra, the multi-crore facility was meant to offer safe housing. Instead, structural defects have caused sewage wastewater and monsoon runoff to leak through ceilings into lower-floor apartments. Stagnant and foul-smelling water frequently drips onto school uniforms, bags, and textbooks. Worse, sewage water from upper-floor toilets seeps directly into lower-floor kitchens and bedrooms.
The development comes even as the district collector submitted a report to the local self-govt department principal secretary, recommending the rehabilitation of residents living in the apartment complex.
