Madurai: A 36-year-old woman, who had endured four pregnancies without a surviving child, died along with her premature baby girl after an unattended delivery in the toilet of her house near Sivakasi on Wednesday.
The couple married 11 years ago. Believing it to be a stomach complaint, she went to the toilet, where she reportedly lost consciousness and delivered a baby girl. V Sankareswari was six months pregnant when she developed sudden abdominal pain at her home in Athiveeranpatti village in Virudhunagar district. The delivery occurred without medical assistance, and her family was initially unaware of what had happened. Relatives later found her unconscious and rushed her and the newborn to a private hospital in Sivakasi. Doctors examined them and declared both dead on arrival. Sankareswari had been receiving antenatal care at a private hospital in Sivakasi during her fifth pregnancy. Her husband, Veeranan, hails from Peraiyur in neighbouring Madurai district. Her first pregnancy, seven years ago, ended in a premature delivery during the seventh month, but the baby did not survive. She subsequently suffered two miscarriages. A few years later, during her fourth pregnancy, she again delivered prematurely. That baby also died, leaving the couple without a surviving child. Following Wednesday’s deaths, police registered a case and sent both bodies to Virudhunagar Government Hospital for postmortem examination.
