Madurai: A 50-year-old man, who was chased and hacked to death by an armed gang near Jaihindpuram police station in Madurai, is among the victims of three murders reported in the district on Saturday. In another incident, 48-year-old Annamayil was hacked to death at Perungudi near Thirumogur on Saturday following a dispute over land. In another incident, a 27-year-old man was found dead behind Govt Boys Higher Secondary School at Melur early on Saturday.
Othakadai police registered a case and launched a search for Rajkumar.
Police said the victim of the gang attack, Sappani Saravanan, of Sappani Kovil Street in Solai Alagupuram, had several criminal cases pending against him. When he attempted to escape, the assailants chased him along the road and repeatedly hacked and stabbed him, killing him on the spot, police said. Police said Annamayil had a dispute with her brother’s son Rajkumar .
Saravanan regularly visited a tea shop on Solai Alagupuram Main Road near his home. Police suspect that the gang had been monitoring his movements for some time. In the early hours of Saturday, the five-member gang came to the shop with sharp weapons and attacked Saravanan. The murder, committed on a busy road close to Jaihindpuram police station, triggered panic among the public. Police registered a case. They recovered evidence from the spot and are examining CCTV footage from cameras installed in the locality to identify and trace the assailants. Deputy commissioner of police (south) A G Inigo Thivyan visited the scene and conducted an inquiry. During an altercation, Rajkumar allegedly attacked Annamayil on the head with a sharp weapon multiple times. She sustained grievous injuries and died on the spot. Rajkumar fled the scene following the attack. The deceased, Chelladurai of Vellanathanpatti, had sustained a fatal injury on the back of his head. Melur police registered a case.
