Madurai : Authorities on Sunday stepped up preparations to evacuate residents from flood-prone areas if water levels rise, keeping temporary shelters, sandbags and dewatering equipment ready as the district braced for another spell of heavy rain.
During Sunday’s review, district monsoon monitoring officer C Palani directed officials to deploy high-capacity motor pumps immediately wherever water accumulates. Sandbags have been stocked to reinforce vulnerable riverbanks and tank bunds, while earthmovers, power saws and water-suction vehicles have been positioned to handle emergencies.
