Madurai Corporation commissioner Gaurav Kumar reviewed the construction of commercial shops worth around Rs 2.6 crore on the Vaigai South Bank and cracked down on waste dumping in and around the river, imposing Rs 18,600 in fines on violators.
Madurai: Madurai corporation on Wednesday approved nearly 200 works worth Rs 9.77 crore to replace water-damaged tar roads with paver blocks in all 100 wards. Around two works have been proposed in each ward, with most estimated at about Rs 4.5 lakh each. The corporation will also spend about Rs 15 lakh to lay paver blocks in front of Thiruparankundram GH and cover a stormwater drain near the premises. The Sept 22 raid led to cases against chief engineer R Ramasamy, nine engineering staff and four contractors. DVAC seized Rs1.35 lakh in unexplained cash and is probing whether cash and digital payments were linked to official favours and engineering works.
Corporation commissioner Gaurav Kumar said work would begin in Oct and would be over by November-end. Officials said roads were selected after studying complaints from councillors, social media and Smart Madurai grievance platform. Either the quality of the tar needs to be changed, or the roads need to be white-topped, or paver blocks used,” social activist V P Manikandan said. Corporation commissioner Gaurav Kumar said strict action would follow against employees named in the DVAC case over suspected bribery.
Stretches repeatedly damaged by sewage overflow, rainwater stagnation and other waterlogging have been identified. “Recent roadworks have proven incapable of lasting more than a single monsoon. Repeated patchwork was wasting corporation funds, he added. At Poonthottam Nagar, the paver block work will be accompanied by construction of a drainage channel. The corporation council passed a resolution to name the street where late Tamil scholar and pattimandram moderator Solomon Pappaiah lived, Visuvasapuri 4th Street in Gnanavolivupuram, as ‘Solomon Pappaiah Street. Councillors unanimously welcomed the move, recalling his contribution to taking Tamil literature to wider audiences through conversational language and his simple way of life.
