S Selvamani, director of interventional cardiology at MSSH, said the technology enabled doctors to look beyond the angiographic appearance of a blockage. IVUS showed the structure of the vessel and lesion, while NIRS provided information about the plaque’s lipid content, helping guide patient-specific treatment, he said. The technology can be useful for patients with complex or apparently intermediate lesions, acute coronary syndromes and diffuse atherosclerotic disease. Download the TOI App.
