Madurai: With truck movement choking key stretches in central: The wider industry impact

Madurai: With truck movement choking key stretches in central Madurai, wholesale traders have proposed shifting major commercial activity out of the congested core to reduce lorry traffic.

Around 700 wholesale shops near Thermutti on Keela Masi Street are set to move to a site identified on Aruppukottai Main Road near Parapathi village, according to the Tamil Nadu Food Grain Merchants Association.

S P Jeyaprakasam, honorary advisor to the association, said the relocation would also encourage transport operators to move closer to the new wholesale hub. “If we leave, the lorry service operators will also voluntarily pull out,” he said.

“That is indeed our objective; onion traders will move there within the next three months,” Jeyaprakasam said. Activists said similar relocation of wholesale markets to peripheral areas had helped ease freight pressure in older commercial zones of Mumbai and Pune. The onion trade, another major source of truck movement in the city centre, is also set to shift to shops being constructed at Mattuthavani. Download the TOI App.
