Munnar : A tea estate worker had a narrow escape after a wild elephant charged at him at Kannimala Estate lower division in the early hours of Friday. Pandiraj , a resident of Kannimala, was standing outside his line house when two elephants entered the tea plantation around dawn. One of the elephants then charged towards him. Pandiraj ran with the elephant following close behind. He managed to reach a nearby bungalow and took shelter there, escaping the attack by a whisker. After alerting the forest department, Pandiraj came out of the bungalow but noticed the elephant standing near the line houses. Fearing that the elephant could damage the house if he entered it, he immediately ran back towards the bungalow and sought refuge there. A rapid response team later arrived at the spot and has been camping in the area to monitor the movement of the elephants. After Friday’s incident, residents have demanded a permanent solution to the recurring elephant menace and stronger surveillance around the areas. The workers have also urged the forest department to intensify patrolling and take immediate measures to prevent wild elephants from reaching the estate lines. Download the TOI App.
