NHAI Expand ATMS Across TN After 520 Parked-Vehicle Crashes Kill 200 in Four Years
Madurai : The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is expanding its Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) across Tamil Nadu after the technology began yielding results on 21 highway project stretches where it has been deployed. Over the past four years, ATMS has been installed across 1,188 km of NHAI corridors in the state. NHAI has more than 6,000 km of highways under its control in Tamil Nadu. NHAI data shows that around 200 people died in 520 crashes involving vehicles colliding with illegally stationed vehicles on its Tamil Nadu network over the past four years. The newer ATMS, conforming to the 2023 standards, has been introduced on recently opened highways, including the Melur Ring Road on Madurai’s outskirts.

Road safety activist S Kamal said ATMS should also be integrated with automated traffic violation detection systems managed by police. “Once violations are detected, the registration number should be captured and e-challans generated remotely against the vehicle owner,” he said. Such crashes are now declining as ATMS coverage expands, with cameras positioned at medians and identified accident blackspots. Its video-detection system can identify stationary vehicles, wrong-way traffic, pedestrians on the carriageway and objects obstructing traffic. Download the TOI App.
