Thrissur: The suspension of the swimming competition at the state school sports meet triggered protests on Friday, a day after the temporary tin-sheet roof over the spectators’ gallery at the Thrissur Aquatic Complex collapsed on Thursday evening. Union minister of state Suresh Gopi visited the injured at the hospital on Friday.
Political organisations, including BJP and SFI, as well as office-bearers of the district Parent-Teachers’ Association (PTA), criticised the authorities for failing to put adequate safety arrangements in place while conducting the competitions.
It is not clear when and where the deferred competition will be held, according to reports. Parents and students also protested against the suspension of the competition, pointing out that the students had missed several classes while preparing for the event. They also complained about the financial losses incurred in connection with their participation. BJP activists took out a march to the aquatic complex, demanding the resignation of sports minister O J Janeesh, holding him responsible for the incident.
