Pay job-work powerloom owners as per 2025 agreement, Tirupur: The wider industry impact

The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

TIRUPUR: Tirupur district collector Dr Manish Narnaware has directed textile manufacturers to pay job-work powerloom owners as per the wage revision agreement reached on April 20, 2025, and not to cut rates citing market fluctuations.

As per the April 20, 2025 agreement facilitated by the Tirupur and Coimbatore district administrations, manufacturers were told to pay the full 2022 rates without any reduction. For categories currently in practice, the revised increase mandated is 15% for the Somanur variety and 10% for other varieties over the 2022 notified rates. The collector urged manufacturers to comply with the April 2025 agreement and extend cooperation to maintain industrial peace and cordial relations.

The agreement requires manufacturers to enter into direct, signed memoranda of understanding with their powerloom owners. The meeting was convened after the Tirupur District Job-Work Powerloom Owners’ Federation complained that some textile manufacturers were attempting to pay reduced wages by not adhering to the pact.

Powerloom owners said the issue had persisted for over three months and alleged only one textile manufacturer attended the Tirupur meeting. Officials who attended the meeting included Coimbatore additional labour commissioner T Dharmaseelan, Tirupur revenue divisional officer Sivaprakash, assistant labour commissioner (conciliation) P Lenin and others. They added that another meeting would be held in Coimbatore district before the end of this month.

The administration reiterated that neither side should reduce the notified rates — manufacturers should not pay less and powerloom owners should not accept less — regardless of changing market conditions.

At a conciliatory meeting held at Tirupur collectorate on Oct 14, the collector discussed implementation of the wage hike pact with representatives of job-work powerloom owners’ federations from Coimbatore and Tirupur and textile manufacturers.
