Sanitation workers protesting
Raising the issue in the state assembly, Udhayanidhi pointed out that when sanitary workers were protesting in 2025 during the DMK govt, chief minister C Joseph Vijay met them. The minister said the protest by sanitary workers prolonged for 150 days in 2025, and that they were not allowed to enter the corporation office premises. Udhayanidhi hit back, asking whether the state govt intended to wait for the ongoing protest to reach 150 days before resolving the issue.

Chennai: Leader of the opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin on Wednesday slammed TVK govt for “failing” to resolve the grievances of sanitary workers even after their agitation entered its 15th day. Rajmohan said files relating to the issue were on the CM’s table and that the govt would arrive at an amicable solution after engaging with representatives of various sanitary workers’ associations. “We have held two rounds of discussions with them,” he said. In contrast, he said, TVK govt had respected their democratic right to protest and allowed them to continue their agitation peacefully on the corporation premises.
Will CM extend the same courtesy this time and hear their demands, he asked. He also asked whether TVK govt would honour its poll promise of regularising their jobs. Udhayanidhi, who had moved a call-attention motion on the protest, alleged that none of the ministers had met the agitating workers. Vijay was present in the House, but he chose not to respond to the queries. School education minister A Rajmohan intervened, assuring the assembly that the state govt would soon find a solution to the workers’ demands. He, however, cited the state’s financial constraints, saying the demands involved not just policy decisions, but also financial implications. Download the TOI App.
