In the petition addressed to the labour welfare department secretary, Consumer Voice secretary N Logu said price lists should be displayed in a manner easily visible to the public, enabling customers to know rates in advance. It said a restaurant chain in Coimbatore was collecting different charges for the same dish at its different branches, and similar variations were being seen in bakeries. The petition said middle-class families often realise the higher cost only after finishing their meal and seeing the bill, forcing them to alter their choices and, in some cases, shift towards roadside pushcart vendors. Referring to earlier enforcement during the MGR era, the organisation said rules mandating price lists in shops and stock details in grocery stores were monitored strictly, but compliance weakened over time.
COIMBATORE: Consumer Voice, a Coimbatore-based consumer organisation, has submitted a petition to the Tamil Nadu govt seeking directions to make it mandatory for hotels, restaurants, bakeries and meat shops in the state to prominently display price lists for all items sold. The organisation alleged that eateries, bakeries and meat shops in many places in the state do not clearly display price lists, preventing consumers from ascertaining actual prices beforehand and creating scope for overcharging. It claimed that meat prices varied widely between shops for the same items, with customers being charged higher amounts. Consumer Voice urged the govt to instruct the departments concerned to ensure compulsory display of price lists and conduct periodic inspections to verify whether price lists are displayed and whether sales are made at the listed rates. It sought legal action against violations, stating that the move would protect consumer rights and ensure transparent business practices. Download the TOI App.
