Managed by the Muziris heritage project under Kerala Tourism, the boat services had faced operational disruptions in recent years due to fund shortage, technical maintenance, route realignment, and fluctuating water levels. The first of the repaired boats has been introduced, with the authorities resuming the half-day packages from Kottappuram.
The tourists will be taken for one-day trip across sites such as Cherai Sahodaran Ayyappan Museum, Pallipuram Fort, Azhikode St Thomas Church, Kottappuram Waterfront, Kottappuram Fort, Paliam Palace, Paliam Nalukettu and Chendamangalam Synagogue,” a senior tourism official said. “The decision to restart and expand operations aims to rebuild the heritage circuit, which highlights the ancient port city of Muziris, once a primary trading center,” the official added. Kochi : The historic Muziris heritage project region is set to resume full-scale water tourism operations next month with the reintroduction of an eight-boat fleet, providing a major boost to regional tourism and inter-district transport. Central to the upgraded service is the introduction of air-conditioned water taxis designed for small groups and premium commuters seeking rapid transit between historical points. Meanwhile, speedboats will provide recreational rides designed to attract domestic weekend travellers. To ensure long-term stability for the restarted services, authorities have upgraded local boat jetties, improved navigational signage, and cleared choked waterway stretches along the canal routes. The initiative also aims to support local livelihoods by driving foot traffic to regional artisans, traditional eateries, and homestays integrated into the Muziris heritage circuit.
