COIMBATORE: The Palli Kalvi Paadhukaappu Iyakkam has launched a statewide signature campaign demanding the introduction of pre-primary classes (LKG-UKG) in all govt schools and the restoration of mother-tongue medium instruction, citing a steady decline in student enrolment in Tamil Nadu’s govt primary schools.
The group has set a target of collecting 25,000 to 30,000 signatures in Coimbatore. Citing figures on govt primary schools in the state, the movement said Tamil Nadu has 24,349 govt primary schools, of which 246 have already been closed. It said 3,027 schools have fewer than 10 students, 6,635 schools have fewer than 20 students and 5,167 schools have fewer than 30 students. In total, it said 14,829 schools — 60.9% — have fewer than 30 students, while 9,520 schools (39.1%) have more than 30 students. The movement announced plans for a statewide outreach programme, including public meetings, cultural events and a campaign tour, from Jan 21 to 31, 2027, covering more than 100 locations, aimed at working with teachers and local communities in areas where enrolment is falling.

S Chandrasekar, representing the movement’s Coimbatore zone, said the campaign was inaugurated in front of the Coimbatore district collectorate and would be carried out for the next one month across regions. He said the drive would also be conducted online. “The campaign aims at boosting admissions in govt schools and creating awareness among parents to participate in school-related events and activities,” Chandrasekar said.
