Thousands of devotees thronged Madurai on Thursday to witness the consecration ceremony

Thousands of devotees attended the grand consecration ceremony at Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple.

MADURAI: Thousands of devotees thronged Madurai on Thursday to witness the consecration ceremony of Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple which was conducted in a grand manner after 17 years. The previous consecration ceremony of the temple was conducted in 2009. The consecration ceremony was performed between 7.40am and 8.10am on Thursday amid chanting of Tamil and Sanskrit hymns. The main yaga sala rituals for the consecration of the Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple commenced on September 11. A total of 180 yaga kundams have been set up to perform rituals.

Following poojas, theertham (holy water) was poured on the kalasams atop the temple towers. Theertha was sprayed on the devotees using pipes and drones. The rituals which commenced continued till the consecration ceremony. LED screens were installed in several places around the temple for the devotees to witness the ceremony. Elaborate arrangements were made by the Madurai district administration and Madurai corporation officials by installing drinking water tanks and mobile toilets in various places around the temple.
