Madurai: VO Chidambaranar Port Authority has introduced 10 days of free storage for laden export-import containers handled through mainline vessels and earmarked about 40,000sqm of additional storage space for the same.
The measure, aimed at promoting container traffic through the port, took effect on Friday and will remain valid until March 31, 2027. About 20,000sqm each has been earmarked at berth 7 and near berth 10 to support container cargo moving through mainline services. Storage charges after the free period will be levied under the prevailing scale of rates. The facility will be available to mainline vessel operators, terminal operators, major industries, freight forwarders, customs brokers, non-vessel operating common carrier operators and other eligible stakeholders.
