Hyderabad: A 95-year-old bedridden man was mauled to death by a pack of stray dogs at Dandepalli mandal in Mancherial district on Thursday, sending shockwaves among residents.
The victim, Oraganti Posham, had been confined to his bed due to age-related ailments and health problems.
He was alone at home when around five stray dogs entered the premises and attacked him, according to police. Dandepalli SI G Rajyavardhan said police were looking into the circumstances surrounding the death and were gathering details about the incident. He said further details would be known after the inquiry. Residents said the movement of stray dogs had increased in the mandal headquarters and expressed concern over the safety of elderly people and others who may be vulnerable to attacks.
As he was unable to move, he could not escape the dogs or defend himself. The dogs reportedly mauled Posham severely, leaving him dead at the spot. The incident came to light when locals noticed what had happened and raised an alarm. Police were subsequently informed and reached the spot. The incident has brought renewed attention to the presence of stray dog packs in residential areas of Dandepalli. They urged the authorities concerned to take measures to prevent such incidents and address the stray dog menace.
