The resolution, moved by deputy CM Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, sought a Central team to assess the impact of El Niño conditions, assistance from the National Disaster Response Fund ( NDRF ) and the immediate release of the Centre’s share of the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF). Hyderabad : The Telangana assembly on Friday unanimously passed a resolution urging the Centre to provide immediate relief and mitigation assistance to address the prevailing rainfall deficit conditions in the state.
Earlier, speaking in the assembly on the impact of El Niño, Bhatti said Telangana recorded a 12% rainfall deficit in June, 1% in July and a sharp 38% deficit in Aug 2026. Against the normal rainfall of 640 mm expected by Sept 18, the state received only 543 mm. The rainfall shortfall has affected cultivation, with kharif acreage declining from 1.39 crore acres last year to 1.23 crore acres this season. Paddy cultivation has also fallen by about 18%. A 27-member expert committee was also constituted to guide crop management and drought-mitigation measures. Despite deficient rainfall and lower hydel generation, Telangana successfully met its highest-ever peak power demand of 19,543 MW on Sept 9.
Bhatti said awareness programmes under the “Scientists at Farmers’ Doorstep” initiative were conducted in 1,600 villages, benefiting more than two lakh farmers. He highlighted the launch of the “Telangana Jalasiri” programme, which aims to strengthen groundwater recharge and water conservation through recharge pits, farm ponds and percolation tanks. Vikramarka said the achievement reflected the govt’s preparedness and commitment to ensuring uninterrupted power supply to farmers, households, industries and commercial establishments even under challenging conditions.
He noted that timely and evenly distributed rainfall was more important for agriculture than isolated heavy spells. To address the situation, the govt began planning in April, holding consultations with meteorological experts, agricultural scientists and officials to prepare district-specific action plans and encourage crop diversification.
