Meerut : Four constables posted at Tilhar police station in Shahjahanpur were dismissed from service for allegedly illegally detaining a 28-year-old jeweller, planting a packet on his motorcycle and extorting Rs 2 lakh after threatening to frame him in a drug-trafficking case.

Two of the constables were arrested, while the other two remained absconding more than a month after the FIR was registered, police said. Kshatriya said he was too traumatised to leave his house immediately after the incident and later approached senior police officers, who ordered an inquiry. “The personnel were found guilty after a detailed probe conducted by a CO-level officer,” Dixit said.

A joint probe by circle officer Jalalabad Deepak Kumar and circle officer Tilhar Vidush Saxena found prima facie merit in his allegations. Investigators found that there was no warrant or complaint against Kshatriya and that the policemen had not obtained permission from a competent authority before taking him into custody. He added that their conduct had damaged the image of police and sent an adverse message to the public, prompting their dismissal. Police arrested Pankaj and Virendra and sent them to jail. Arun and Tushar allegedly fled after the FIR was registered and remained at large.
