Agra: A court in Uttar Pradesh ’s Etah district has sentenced a 45-year-old man to life imprisonment for beating and strangling his wife to death after she opposed his extramarital affair.

District and sessions judge Rakesh Dhar Dubey also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on the convict, noting that failure to pay the amount would result in an additional six months of imprisonment. Mamta and Rohit were married in 2008 and had four children, according to the complaint. A case was registered against Rohit under IPC section 302 (murder) and 120B (criminal conspiracy) at Awagarh police station and he was arrested.

The victim’s brother, Yogesh Kumar, lodged a police complaint accusing Rohit Kumar, alias Guddu, of murdering his sister. Their relationship soured after Rohit developed an extramarital relationship with a woman from Aligarh, eventually leaving home to live with her about a month prior to the incident. During the trial—after Rohit rejected the chargesheet by claiming his wife died from a fall down the stairs—the couple’s four children testified against their father, alongside supporting testimonies from other witnesses and the post-mortem report. Finding the evidence conclusive, the court held Rohit guilty of murder and delivered the life sentence.
