Their relationship deteriorated after Kumar began an affair with a woman from neighbouring Aligarh and moved out to live with her a month before the killing, according to the complaint. Her brother, Yogesh Kumar, then filed a police complaint after the body was recovered, naming Kumar as the main suspect. Kumar denied the murder charge during the trial and claimed that Mamta had died after accidentally falling down a flight of stairs. However, their four children testified that their father had attacked their mother. The judge ruled that the children’s statements, along with witness testimonies and medical evidence, proved Kumar’s guilt.
