Varanasi: Agricultural exports from Purvanchal recorded significant growth in recent years, supported by govt policies conducive to agriculture and exports. Fruits, vegetables and flowers grown in eastern UP are being shipped to markets in Gulf countries, Europe, Bangladesh and Nepal.
Record Growth in Agricultural Exports from Varanasi Airport
C B Singh, the Deputy General Manager of APEDA’s regional office, announced that exports of perishable agricultural products from Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport have reached record levels over the past six years. This growth positions Varanasi and the broader Purvanchal region as significant hubs for agricultural exports, driven by increasing overseas demand for locally grown produce.
Exports increased from 4 metric tonnes in 2020-21 to more than 1,000 metric tonnes in 2025-26, according to APEDA. Year-wise figures stood at 4 MT in 2020-21, 157 MT in 2021-22, 561 MT in 2022-23, 750 MT in 2023-24, 1,032 MT in 2024-25 and 1,010 MT in 2025-26. Singh said exports dipped slightly in 2025-26 due to trade disruptions in the Middle East in Mar, but remained above the 1,000 MT mark.
