Varanasi: Azamgarh police on Thursday arrested a wanted accused after an encounter in the Jiyanpur police station area near a culvert on the Amma Aima Mor–Dhanchhula road.

Police recovered a .315-bore illegal country-made pistol, two spent cartridges and one live cartridge from his possession. The case relates to an incident reported on Oct 19. A case under Sections 3(5) and 109(1) of the BNS was registered at Jiyanpur police station. He said he went to Chauko Bazaar on October 19 after being called by Satyam Yadav, where he and others attacked Ramprasad and Prashant over resentment linked to the old case.

Ramprasad Yadav lodged a written complaint at Jiyanpur police station, alleging that due to enmity over refusal to compromise in an old case, 11 named accused, including Satyam Yadav and Ankit Yadav, rammed the motorcycle of Ramprasad and his brother Prashant Yadav, causing them to fall.

Ankit opened fire on a police team after being surrounded during a checking and search operation, according to reports. During questioning, Ankit allegedly told police that he had been living in Azamgarh city while preparing for the Army. In retaliatory firing by police, he sustained a bullet injury in his left leg. He was arrested and taken to the district hospital for treatment. The accused then allegedly attacked them with sticks and rods with intent to kill. Ramprasad sustained serious injuries.
