The centre will focus on developing new drug formulations and their clinical evaluation,” said BBAU spokesperson Rachna Gangwar. She said the research aims to explore innovative treatment approaches for PKDL and strengthen collaboration among the three institutions. “As part of the initiative, a Centre for Collaborative Research (CCR) has been established jointly at BBAU and BHU, in collaboration with ICMR-RMRIMS, Patna. Nanotechnology-based formulations will be investigated for their potential to improve treatment, although their effectiveness will need to be established through research and clinical evaluation. “PKDL is a skin condition associated with a previous kala-azar infection. It can cause skin lesions and may serve as a reservoir of the parasite, making its effective treatment important for controlling the disease,” she added. Download the TOI App.
The project will be carried out in collaboration with Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and ICMR-RMRIMS, Patna. It will use nanotechnology to develop improved drug formulations and evaluate their effectiveness in treating the disease. Prof P S Rajinikanth, dean of the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences at BBAU, will lead the project as principal investigator. Prof Rakesh Kumar Singh from the department of biochemistry at BHU’s Institute of Science will also contribute to the research.
