Bijnor: A one-year-old elephant calf has died after becoming trapped in mud near a pond in the Sahuwala forest range of Bijnor district. Forest officials believe the calf sustained a serious chest injury from a tusk of a male elephant while the herd attempted to rescue it.

Najibabad divisional forest officer, Prithviraj said, “ An autopsy is being conducted. The herd may have gone to the pond to drink water when the calf became stuck in the mud. Adult elephants appeared to have made repeated attempts to pull it out. The calf may have been pulled and squeezed during the rescue attempts, and a tusker may have accidentally injured it with its tusk, officials suspect. The herd eventually managed to pull the calf out, but it did not survive. The elephants remained around the calf for some time, trumpeting loudly, before leaving the carcass at the spot. Loud trumpeting was heard near the pond late on Saturday night, leading the forest team to initially suspect that two elephant herds might have been fighting. When they reached the spot on Sunday morning, they found the calf lying dead near the pond with a deep injury on its chest.
