BJP rejigs key morchas, steps up 2027 poll prep

The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

Lucknow: Stepping up organisational preparations for the 2027 UP assembly elections, the BJP on Thursday effected a major restructuring of four key frontal organisations — Mahila Morcha, OBC Morcha, Scheduled Caste (SC) Morcha and Kisan Morcha.

Over the past few weeks, the party has been systematically reconstituting its organisational layers, from the state core team to various morchas and regional structures, in what is being described as an effort to sharpen social outreach and strengthen booth-level mobilisation before the electoral battle of 2027. Because the three morchas target constituencies that are expected to play a decisive role in the next assembly elections, the restructuring assumes significance. The party also appointed Anas Sajid Usmani as state president of Minority Morcha, replacing Basit Ali, who was recently elevated as national president of BJP Minority Morcha. Jaya Pal, the widow of late advocate Umesh Pal, who was killed by Atiq Ahmad gang, has been inducted as a secretary in the OBC Morcha. The exercise came on a day when BJP national general secretary and UP in-charge Vinod Tawde was in Lucknow reviewing the party’s organisational preparedness, poll planning and grassroots activities. The reshuffle marked the latest phase of an organisational overhaul being undertaken by the BJP under state president Pankaj Chaudhary after assuming charge of the state unit. SC Morcha is central to BJP’s efforts to retain and expand support among various Dalit groups While Kisan Morcha serves as the party’s principal interface with farmers and rural communities. Likewise, Mahila Morcha remains critical for consolidating the growing women voter base which has increasingly emerged as a distinct political constituency in UP. The constitution of OBC morcha also attains significance even as the BJP seeks to augment its outreach amongst the backward castes as a counter to opposition’s PDA poll pitch. The announcement of Anas Sajid Usmani as Minority Morcha president is equally significant at a time when the BJP is seeking to broaden engagement with Pasmanda Muslims and other minority communities through targeted outreach programmes.
