KANPUR: Delhi Police arrested UPSC aspirant Suraj Verma (23) for allegedly making a hoax call claiming that an organisation operating from Pakistan had selected his former roommate to carry out a bomb blast in Delhi.
Suraj allegedly told Rohit Kumar that he was calling from Lahore and that an organisation named Jannat E Firdaus had been monitoring him and had selected him to carry out the blast. Suraj told police that he had intended to scare Rohit as a prank. Kanpur Police Commissioner Raghubir Lal said Kakadev police’s surveillance team found Manoj’s son, Akshat Verma, a NEET aspirant, at the house. Akshat told police that his nephew Suraj, a resident of Dibiyapur in Auraiya who was preparing for the UPSC examination, had recently visited them. Police said Suraj had previously shared accommodation with Suman and Rohit. Lal said the local intelligence unit questioned Suraj before Delhi Police arrested him.
He then disconnected the call. Suman Kumar, a civil services aspirant from Bihar living in Indra Vikas Colony, Mukherjee Nagar, approached the police after his roommate Rohit received the call from an unknown landline number. Investigators traced the number to a private telecom fibre connection registered in the name of Manoj Kumar Verma, a resident of Naveen Nagar in Kanpur’s Kakadev area. A Delhi Police team, in coordination with local police, raided the identified location. He allegedly used the landline at his relative’s house and modulated his voice to make it appear that he represented a Pakistan-based organisation. Intelligence officials are investigating his possible links.
