Varanasi: Minimally Invasive Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting Surgery (MICS CABG) was successfully performed on a 52-year-old patient at Sir Sunderlal Hospiltal of the Institute of Medical Science, Banaras Hindu University .
The surgery has been recently started by the IMS, BHU and the patient was the first to avail this facility in Purvanchal region, said the hospital.
Patients can generally return to their normal lifestyle within 7–10 days after surgery.
Following the necessary investigations, the patient was advised to undergo MICS CABG surgery, said Dr Pandey. Dr Pandey said that in minimally invasive procedure, the surgery is performed through a small incision without opening the chest. The surgery was performed by Dr Arvind Pandey of department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS), IMS, with Dr Narendra Nath Das and Dr Kinishon in his team. The patient, a resident of Varanasi, was having calcified blockages in coronary arteries causing recurrent chest pain and episodes of heart attack. The bypass surgery was successfully performed through an approximately 8cm incision between the ribs on the left side of the chest. The patient was discharged from the hospital on the fifth day after surgery and now he is able to perform his daily activities without any difficulties. The MICS technique enables faster recovery of the patient and results in a relatively smaller surgical scar. The procedure also involves less pain.
This facility was previously available mainly in major metropolitan cities, but is now also available at Sir Sunderlal Hospital, Banaras Hindu University.
