Agra: A family in Muzaffarnagar arranged the remarriage of their 31-year-old widowed daughter-in-law, a month after her husband’s death, to underline that widows should have the freedom to rebuild their lives and make their own choices.
Meenakshi, a resident of Bahadurpur in Haridwar, married Rohit, 33, of Dayalpuram in Khatauli , in 2017. Rohit’s father, Om Pal, a mason who was suffering from cancer, died on August 14. They had two minor daughters — Ritu and Avika. Rohit died the following day, leaving Meenakshi and their two daughters.

“I was Meenakshi’s brother-in-law, but now I am her brother and will do every duty that a brother does for his sister,” Mohit said. Meenakshi said she made the decision herself and faced no pressure. She said she was happy that her in-laws supported her decision and treated her like their daughter. Her mother-in-law said the family would continue to support Meenakshi and her daughters after the marriage.
Rohit’s mother, Sunita Devi, later discussed remarriage with Meenakshi, saying she was concerned about her future and that of her daughters. Meenakshi agreed, and the family arranged her marriage with Yogesh , who runs a chaat shop in Narayanpur, Rajasthan . Rohit’s brother Mohit performed the kanyadaan ceremony, taking on the role of Meenakshi’s brother. Download the TOI App.
The wedding was held at an Arya Samaj temple on Wednesday.
