Bareilly : An attempt by a family in the Cantt area to pressure police and the administration through a self-immolation bid at the Collectorate has backfired, with police initiating proceedings to recover Rs 4 lakh in surety money from four people. Authorities are also likely to appoint a receiver for the disputed land.
The dispute involves a 60-square-yard plot in Manpur Chiktiya village, which is claimed by the families of Kamlesh, who goes by her first name, and Rajveer Kumar. On June 20, police took preventive action against Kamlesh, her son Ashutosh, and Nirdosh, binding them down for six months with a surety of Rs 1 lakh each. On Aug 12, Kamlesh and Monu’s sister Roshni attempted self-immolation at the collectorate. Following the incident, Cantt inspector Sanjay Dheer wrote to SDM Sadar seeking recovery of the Rs 4 lakh surety amount from the four people and appointment of a receiver for the disputed plot.
Dheer said police had taken preventive action against those involved in maintaining peace and were initiating further legal proceedings. He said strict vigil was also being maintained to prevent any recurrence.
