Lucknow: In a sampling of packaged and mineral water from across the state, the food safety and drug administration (FSDA) collected at least 242 samples from manufacturing units and found as many as 146 samples substandard, while 57 samples failed the microbiological testing. Only 39 samples, or just over 16%, were fit for consumption.
Units that do not improve despite being given the prescribed opportunity will face legal action under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. FSDA has also directed units where substandard samples were found, through a notice for improvement, to remove the deficiencies and ensure compliance with the prescribed quality standards. In cases of substandard samples, FSDA has given the units a chance to rectify the issues. It clarified that after the deficiencies in the units are removed, the assistant commissioner (food) of the division concerned will physically verify the improvements and send a report to the headquarters.
