Detention of Indian Executive in Moscow Raises Legal Concerns
Chandan Gupta, an Indian national and deputy general manager at a Noida company, was reportedly detained by Moscow police for approximately 48 hours due to a misunderstanding regarding his visa status. Gupta was in Russia on a work visa, but authorities mistakenly believed he was traveling on a tourist visa.
His associate, Sneha, alleged that during his detention, Gupta was coerced into signing documents he could not understand, as he does not speak or read Russian. She claimed that police threatened to escalate the situation by filing four additional cases against him if he refused to comply.
Sneha expressed skepticism about the police’s ability to substantiate their allegations in court, citing a lack of evidence. She also criticized the Indian embassy in Russia for not providing sufficient support during this ordeal. Gupta’s case has drawn attention to the legal challenges faced by foreign nationals in Russia, particularly regarding the treatment of individuals who may not fully understand local laws and language.
