Police said the man and the minor had gone to an orchard outside their village after their families opposed the relationship and consumed poison. The girl told police that she had lived with her maternal grandparents since childhood. She said this prompted her action. CO Rajesh Kumar Dwivedi said the matter involved two communities and that a case would be registered if a complaint was received. CO Kayamganj Ajay Verma said the case prima facie appeared linked to a relationship.

She alleged that her maternal uncle and grandfather beat her after learning about the relationship and that her uncle had arranged her marriage elsewhere.
