Kanpur: A fast-track court on Thursday convicted a man for dowry death and sentenced him to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 35,000.

Additional district and sessions judge Piyush Siddharth, in his order, observed that the accused, Amarjeet Singh Khanuja, had subjected his wife, Priya Sahu (38), to cruelty, which led to her death in Apr 2024.

Saurabh stated that on Apr 25, 2024, Amarjeet informed him through a message that Priya had set herself on fire. He alleged that when he reached her house, he found her body lying outside the bathroom, leading him to suspect foul play.

In his complaint, Saurabh alleged that his sister was married to Amarjeet Singh Khanuja on Nov 17, 2018. He added that the prosecution examined 15 witnesses in support of its case. After hearing both sides, the court convicted Amarjeet Singh Khanuja and sentenced him to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment.
