Kanpur: In an encounter late Friday, police arrested a man allegedly involved in the Oct 6 snatching incident under Bharathana police station limits in Etawah district.

The accused, identified as Anuj Shakya (32), sustained a bullet injury to his leg in retaliatory police firing and was admitted to a hospital for treatment. Shakya was apprehended during a vehicle-checking drive on the Gangaura road around midnight on Oct 16-17, according to police. During interrogation, Shakya allegedly confessed to involvement in the Oct 6 snatching incident in Bharathana. The bag contained Rs 2,000, which the accused allegedly divided among themselves. Shakya received Rs 700, police said, adding that part of the recovered cash was linked to the incident.

Police said he allegedly opened fire at officers while attempting to flee. Police said three men had allegedly snatched a handbag from a woman travelling on a motorcycle from Baharpura to Bharathana near the Baharpura canal. Police recovered an illegal country-made pistol, two live cartridges, a spent cartridge, a motorcycle and cash from his possession. The police retaliated in self-defence, injuring him in the left leg before arresting him.
