Lucknow: A seven-year-old boy suffering from Guillain-Barré syndrome, severe pneumonia and septic shock was discharged on Friday after spending 22 days in the Trauma Critical Care Unit at King Georges Medical University, where he required mechanical ventilation for 14 days. The child was referred to the KGMU Trauma Centre from Prayagraj in a critical condition on Aug 22. Guillain-Barré syndrome is a rare condition where your immune system mistakenly attacks the peripheral nerves. He was admitted to the Trauma Critical Care Unit, where ventilatory support and intensive care started immediately.
He remained on mechanical ventilation for 14 days before being gradually weaned off. After 22 days of intensive care, he was discharged and returned home with his family. Doctors said the child’s respiratory failure and septic shock required prolonged ventilation and close monitoring. Prof Prem Raj Singh said the Trauma Critical Care Unit provides emergency intensive care to critically ill patients when required, including those referred from outside the city. Trauma CMS Prof Prem Raj Singh facilitated the admission. The child was treated under the supervision of Trauma Critical Care Unit in-charge Prof Zia Arshad and prof Ram Gopal Maurya, along with the critical care team. He then received supportive care and rehabilitation and continued to improve. Download the TOI App.
