Kanpur: Kotwali police have registered a case against three persons accused of cheating around 43 youths of nearly Rs 80 lakh on the pretext of securing jobs in the Uttar Pradesh Secondary Education Service Selection Commission, Prayagraj.
Complainant Sharad Awasthi, a resident of Nehru Nagar, said he had been working as a manager and property caretaker at two City cinemas since 2011. They were allegedly asked to pay Rs 2.5 lakh before receiving appointment letters and another Rs 2.5 lakh after they started drawing salaries. Awasthi alleged that Rs 2.5 lakh was taken from him between July and September 2025 on the pretext of securing lower division clerk posts for his son, Yashvardhan, and daughter, Archita. He further alleged that his acquaintance, Shan Ali, paid Rs 2 lakh in June 2025 for a clerical post for his nephew, Mohd Sohel.
Awasthi alleged that Mishra introduced his maternal uncle-in-law, the second accused, Arvind Narayan Shukla, as a joint secretary in the commission. The third accused, Gyanendra Dubey, allegedly introduced himself as Shukla’s personal assistant and sought money from candidates. The accused allegedly claimed links with the commission’s joint secretary and promised appointments as lower division clerks, peons and gardeners, according to police. Police said the candidates were told that the recruitment process involved seven stages of documentation and were asked to submit affidavits, medical fitness certificates, Aadhaar and PAN cards, educational certificates and passport-size photographs. Kotwali in-charge Arun Dwivedi said an FIR was registered against three accused after the complainant approached the police commissioner’s public grievance cell.
During this period, he came in contact with one of the accused, Neeraj Mishra. Mishra allegedly claimed that he had himself been appointed to a Group D post and could arrange direct recruitment through the governor’s quota. An investigation is underway. Download the TOI App.
