Lucknow: A new cultural space is coming up in Ballia to connect younger generations with the legacy of folk hero Veer Lorik and keep the Bhojpuri folk epic Lorikayan relevant through contemporary performances.
The culture department is constructing a 350-seat auditorium and library at Hasanpura revenue village in Bansdih tehsil at a cost of Rs 4.97 crore. The first instalment of Rs 1.36 crore has been released and foundation work has begun.
Officials said the auditorium is being planned as a modern platform for folk theatre, music, storytelling and visual presentations based on Lorikayan. His stories carried a message of courage, bravery and resistance to injustice,” tourism and culture minister Jaiveer Singh said, adding that the auditorium and library would help preserve the legacy and introduce younger generations to his life and contribution. Another enduring legend is linked to Veer Lorik Stone in Markundi Valley, which folklore says Lorik split with a single stroke of his sword.
It will be equipped with advanced sound systems, HD projection, intelligent LED lighting and acoustically designed interiors, enabling artists to present the centuries-old oral tradition in formats that are more accessible to younger audiences. “Veer Lorik’s valour and folk narratives were an important part of Uttar Pradesh’s cultural heritage. Veer Lorik, regarded as the principal hero of Lorikayan, was born in Gaura village of Ballia’s Sikanderpur tehsil. Folk traditions celebrate his extraordinary strength and his resistance to injustice. One of the best-known episodes recounts his battle with the ruler of Sonbhadra to rescue Manjari.
